Located on the University of Maryland Founding Campus in Baltimore, the Lexington Street Garage serves students, faculty and visitors arriving at the downtown campus. Upgrading and converting to automated operations, Read & Company was retained to design improvements to the exterior of the garage, principally developing protective canopies for the exterior self-use gate operators at vehicular entry and exit points.

Four identical glass and stainless steel assemblies, made by rolling stainless steel pipe in six bent sections and then welding and finishing them to form a seamless on-piece support, operate as awning, visor, bollard, and light fixture simultaneously sheltering, shading, protecting, and illuminating. Each canopy cantilevers from the ground to support patterned, translucent, uplighted glass. The canopies shield patrons from the rain and sun, protect parking equipment from vehicles, and light the drive aisles at night elevating the experience of entering and leaving the parking garage to an unexpected pleasure.
